Encumbrances and Leave
Description: In Workday, any absence or leave type configured with a payroll effect automatically stops encumbrances for the duration of the leave. These include Leave Without Pay (LWOP), FAMLI, FML, Long Term Disability, Short Term Disability, Paid Military Leave, Parental Leave, Sabbatical, and Unpaid Administrative Leave. Workday assumes employees on payroll‑effect leave types will not receive their regular pay and therefore stops encumbering salary. However, in some cases, such as FAMLI leave, employees may continue working and receiving regular pay. Because FAMLI is configured as a payroll‑effect leave type, encumbrances still stop, which can result in salary encumbrances ending unexpectedly even though departments continue to have ongoing salary commitments.
